I downloaded this after seeing it reviewed by FictionFan (and her review is excellent). I have read very little by Henry James, but am going to work my way through more of his writing. This is a novella with a strong Venice setting and more of a character study than a plot-filled adventure, but the protagonist and his self-justifications were well done, and there was a certain amount of suspense towards the end.
Oblique in disclosure of dialogue and dense in nuances - these are the fascinating techniques that Henry James uses to make you work, hard sometimes, to persist and discover his skill in rendering in speech and story, every aspect possible that contributes to complete a polished work of fiction.
One has to admire a genius like this forever refining his narrative skills. James is witty, urbane and fully confident about the vapid milieu in which his characters circulate.

The narrator of the story, a book reviewer, cannot discover the secret meaning and intention of his favorite author. He becomes obsessed with finding the "figure in the carpet." It made me think...
What is the secret intent of any artist's work? Can we enjoy reading, listening, or viewing art without ever knowing? What if we don't interpret it in the way that the artist intended?

'Washington Square' was much more substantial: I liked the portrayal of Mrs Penniman, with her desire to facilitate, dramatize and be involved in Catherine's love affair with the unpleasant Morris. Catherine's father was hard to understand - he was so dismissive of his daughter and enjoyed being proved right even when her heart was broken.… (more)
