Short biography
David Baldacci (b. 1960 in Richmond, Virginia) is a bestselling American novelist. Baldacci received a B.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and a law degree from the University of Virginia. As a student, Baldacci wrote short stories in his spare time, and later practiced law for nine years near Washington, D.C.. While living in Alexandria, Virginia, Baldacci wrote short stories and screenplays without much success. In despair, he turned to novel writing, taking three years to write Absolute Power. It took Baldacci two years to get the book published, but when it finally did hit the shelves in 1996 it was an international best seller.

David Baldacci serves as a national ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and participates in numerous charities as well as founding his own foundation for literacy, Wish You Well Foundation. Baldacci was raised in Virginia and still resides there (in Vienna, Virginia) with his wife, Michelle A. Collin-Baldacci (Mikki), and two children. His cousin is the Democratic Governor of Maine John Baldacci, first elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.

In 1997, People magazine named him one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world.

Vega Jane has questions about what happened to her parents and grandfather. She also suspects that a lot of what she has been taught about her town's history is not entirely true. Seeing her mentor run into the surrounding forest raises further questions as they have been taught that their town is all that exists and that there is nothing beyond. As she tries to find out more about what her mentor was up to she discovers that she has powers that she cannot explain. This gets her into trouble with the town council.

I found the book to be a bit slow moving and the different terminology took a bit of getting used to - not sure why things like days, minutes and years had to be called something else.

The book raises a lot of questions but doesn't really answer any of them. I assume that will be dealt with in the sequels.

It was an ok read.

It gets a 4 because it mostly kept me entertained while I listened to it. I've read other David Baldacci books and usually enjoy them. I've read other Amos Decker series books as well.

I'm still pondering how long shadows ties in to the story. Is it that our pasts cast long shadows onto our current life? Is it that our relationships (friends, spouses, family) cast long shadows that affect us?

Amos Decker remains but most other characters we're used to seeing are marginalized in this book. Decker gets a new FBI partner (since his previous one moved to New York). Decker's handler (and cheerleader with the bureau) retires. Decker's friend and landlord gets married and moves away.

Decker's brain is changing (for better or worse we're not told yet). On top of that, Decker's former police partner and friend commits suicide.

The case Decker and his new partner are assigned involves the murder of a federal judge and her bodyguard in Florida. But, as usual, things are not what they seem on the surface. I did not reason out the culprit(s), but that tends to be my norm, so if you are someone who usually can, your experience may be different.

I do plan to read more entries in the series.

Amos Decker is an unusual man. In his early twenties, he had suffered a brutal tackle during an American football game which left him with severe concussion, and led to him giving up the game permanently. It also left him with a perfect memory, so perfect that he literally never forgets anything. This had been especially valuable during his subsequent career as a police officer, and then detective.

About sixteen months before the novel opens, Decker had returned home from work one night to find that his wife and their child had been murdered. After that his life, understandably, fell apart, and found himself jobless and homeless. Since then, he has started to recoup some order in his life, and he now works as a private detective, just about managing to keep himself afloat. His life is thrown back into disarray when his former partner from his time on the police force comes looking for him to let him know that someone has confessed to the murder of his family. Decker makes his way to the police station, hoping to find out more. Meanwhile, a gunman opens fire in a local school, killing various pupils and members of staff.

There is a lot going on in this story, but it all hangs together coherently. I thought that Baldacci handled the oddities of Decker’s enhanced, or at least unusual;, cognitive powers very capably, and the story was very gripping.
